You've become the wall holding up the ceiling, so stepping back to rest and nurture your own needs and desires feels like everything might collapse. It won't, and this book shows you why.
The same life, but with more time,
energy and space left over for you.
"I’ve never felt more seen and heard in a book and honestly, it made me super aware of my own self abandonment choices. Jess has a nurturing, supportive way of showing you how to navigate life without abandoning yourself in the process.
I especially like that she shares her personal journey with self-abandonment and the reminders of how important it is for me to hold space for myself while carrying so much for others. I feel every woman should read this book because it gives you tangible tools to choose yourself daily, which I know is of upmost importance.
So much has shifted for me since this book landed in my hands. Thank you so much for your wisdom and guidance Jess!"
"I absolutely adored this book. It spoke to me with an authenticity that I feel so many books like it miss.
Honestly, at first it felt like a bit of a call out. Jess named patterns I’ve been living in for years: a little progress, then falling back, a little progress, then falling back. I’ve known about my high-capacity challenges for a long time, but I never had the framework to actually do something about them. This book gave me that.
And it didn’t ask me to just let go of the things that matter or let the walls come down because I couldn’t hold them up anymore. Instead, I built a better system. I’m still building it, but I can feel the difference. For the first time in a really long time, I’ve stayed in that on-top-of-the-world season without piling on more and more until I crash.
No book, person, or system has ever genuinely helped me break this pattern before. This one did."
Your phone lights up first thing in the morning. Multiple meetings or clients throughout the day. Hundreds of emails to sort through. Colleagues or employees needing you. Before you've even left the house in the morning, you're running a mental checklist of everything on your plate for the day and you've automatically said yes to a dozen things before you've finished the breakfast you're eating on the run. Some part of you is already rearranging your lunch plans, pushing back a call, and working out who can cover for you on the homefront that night because you'll likely have to work late that night, again.
Nobody would call your life a problem. You have a meaningful business or career you've worked hard for, people who love you, a home that runs like a well-oiled machine - most of the time. You're the one everyone counts on both personally and professionally to handle the "thing" or get the job done. And yet, in the shower or on the drive home in those quick moments when you actually have time to think, a small voice inside keeps saying "Something about this isn't quite working".
More than likely there's a recurring inner script running one of the following thoughts: "I know I overcommit." "I know I need to say NO more." "I'll deal with how I feel later." "I never have enough time." "There's always more to be done." "It'll be easier if I just do it myself."
If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone and more importantly, you're not broken. In fact, if you're like most capable women you've probably tried to address how much is yours to carry dozens of times with results that just don't seem to last. And this is important to note... most women who pick up this book can name their patterns out loud and tried a lot of different strategies for becoming more efficient and productive. And yet, they watch themselves repeat old patterns and continue to carry what they've been carrying all along anyway.
We live in a performance-driven culture that rewards self-abandonment. The greatest cost isn't burnout. It's forgetting who you were before the world told you who to become.
The usual diagnosis from yourself and others is this: There's too much on your plate, so take some off. Delegate. Say no. Take the vacation.
That advice makes sense, and some of it is truly helpful. For a week or two. But your list of responsibilities quickly fills back up, the boundaries you set quietly soften, and you're left concluding that you're either bad at boundaries or there just must be something wrong with you. Self-judgment creeps in. Your confidence goes down. And you work even harder to compensate.
This is called the Self-Abandonment Trap. It's a conditioned way of relating to yourself, learned early and rewarded often by the performance-culture we live and work in, where you work really hard to prove your value and worth and slowly lose touch with your own needs. Somewhere along the way, you start mistaking who you learned to be for who you really are. From the outside it looks like strength and generosity. From the inside it can feel like guilt, pressure and a constant fear of letting yourself and others down.
You can't boundary your way out of that because the boundary actually threatens the identity, and the identity usually wins.
Picture a house with walls that hold up the ceiling. Take one of those walls out and everything above it sags or worse, crumbles and falls apart.
For many high-capacity women, they've learned to become that wall. One yes at a time, the marriage, the job, the kids' schedules and the friendships all got arranged around the fact that she'll carry it. She'll drop what she's doing to help. She'll figure it out. So when she actually has time to step back to rest, it doesn't feel like self-care at all. It feels like the ceiling on top of everything she's built and all the responsibility she carries from one day to the next might come crashing down if she takes any time for herself.
That's why the vacation and retreat glow fades before you've had a chance to unpack your bags. It's why the new morning routine collapses in less than a week. Many of the tools you've tried likely assumed the design of your life was sound and all you needed to do was figure out how to run it more skillfully.
None of them asked why your life needs this much of you to function in the first place.
I was six when I first saw the Enjoli perfume commercial on the television. A woman in a business suit saunters on screen, singing that she can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, and still have energy left over for her man. The tagline was "The 8-hour perfume for the 24-hour woman." I can still sing every word to this day.
Nobody saw it as a warning. It was a script for how to be high-capacity woman who could do it all, and I took on the messaging I received from that commercial the way most women of that generation did.
Ironically, it fit a lesson I'd already learned. After my parent's divorce at the age of four, I'd unconsciously created a story that my value, my love and my safety were things I had to earn by being productive, capable, helpful and low-maintenance.
So, throughout my life, I performed. Got good grades. Became valedictorian. An undergraduate and graduate college degree, all paid for out of my own pocket while working a full-time job. A fast climb up the corporate ladder, fifty to sixty hours a week juggling school, work and plenty more on the homefront in my marriage. From the outside it all looked and felt like success because I made great money and received rewards and accolades for my performance, not just at work but in all areas of my life.
But by my early thirties, my body was sending signals I couldn't keep ignoring. I'd been in therapy for anxiety and anger management issues for several years, was forty pounds overweight, struggling with severe low back pain and had reached a point where I was completely burned out. I blamed it all on my high-pressure job so in 2006 I left the corporate world and become trained as a life coach and Journey Method practitioner so I could start my own coaching business and teach worn out wonder women like I had become how to heal their burnout and set themselves free.
Two years later I was burned out again.
That second time it happened taught me what the first one hadn't. My first career had rewarded my self-abandonment in the form of bonuses and recognition, so I didn't think I was the problem. When my burnout carried forward into my new career, I realized I'd inadvertently carried the same operating system and toxic work ethic I'd been operating from previously into my new career. In fact, I realized then I had been unconsciously arranging everything I did around proving my value and my worth my entire life, and every time it worked, it taught me to keep going. To keep achieving. To keep working hard. To keep proving my value.
Radical Wholeness grew out of that lesson and expanded into the Brave-Hearted Way framework that I've been teaching for nearly two decades of working with high-capacity women in need of self-rescue, much like the woman I used to be.
That's what this book is all about.
When you stop trying to run your life more efficiently and start looking at why it's actually requiring you to disappear, your effort finally lands on the root cause of the problem instead of the symptom.
The book calls this Self-Rescue by Design. It's a personalized, repeatable process for seeing the conditioning and survival strategies that taught you to put yourself last, loosening their grip, and then redesigning how you live, lead, love and work so your life no longer depends on you overriding or abandoning yourself to succeed.
You don't become someone new. You reconnect with and remember who you were before the script. Most of the women I work with keep the same job, the same marriage, the same mortgage. They just hold all of it differently because they learn how to build a life they no longer need to escape from, from the inside out.
Carl Jung put it this way:
Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.
My version is this:
When you learn why you react the way you do, what you’re protecting, and what you’re repeating, you stop living on autopilot. Self-awareness becomes freedom.
The Brave-Hearted Way is at the center of Radical Wholeness and is something I've created over the past 20 years after breaking free from my own self-abandonment in my early thirties. A personalized self-rescue compass and road map, this 6-phase framework teaches high-capacity women how to create a well-nourished life and career that they love without burnout, guilt, or self-abandonment.
Not only will it empower you to break free from the underlying fears, beliefs, habits and structures that keep self-abandonment in place, you will also learn self-aligned practices that help you redesign the way you live, lead, love and work without the stress, overwhelm and exhaustion that most high-capacity women carry.
You can learn the phases in order or start wherever the pressure is greatest. The book gives you a sneak peek into each of these phases and shows you how to tell where to begin your own self-rescue journey.
"I can’t thank Jess enough for the power she brought to my soul. I owe so much of my eyes being open, my rooted-ness, my alignment to her. I was in and out of therapy, many a misdiagnosis, so much invalidation and dismissal that I really struggled to balance my life, constantly thinking something was wrong with me.
I moved from feeling burned out, crying, and overwhelmed to feeling complete and whole within myself and thriving in my business. I would not be here if it wasn’t for her love, pulling me up and out of the wreckage of my own ego, frustration and patterns.
Through Jess’s program, I was able to break out of my own toxic cycles and get grounded and rooted into what I really wanted, who I was and stand strong in my own life’s purpose.
Thank you, Jess!"
"As a single mom, I’ve been the load-bearing wall for my family, and it is exhausting. Radical Wholeness named what I have been living: that we are hard-wired and conditioned to be everything to everyone.
What I love is that the book doesn’t stop at the why. The guidance and self-inquiries helped me get honest about what was really happening, and the step-by-step phases she guides you through are both thorough and deeply supportive.
I especially appreciate the honesty about what it takes to become the woman you deserve to be, one with time and spaciousness to care for herself and a life that feels actually good to live in.
If you’ve spent years being everything to everyone, this book is for you.
"Jess’s Brave-Hearted Way framework, her sisterhood circles and her annual in-person retreat helped me make tremendous changes in my life over the period of less than a year.
When I started her program, I was unhealthy, angry, and running a business that was successful but not my life’s calling. This program gave me the courage to quit my business and improve my life. As a result, I am now a nonprofit consultant and I have amazing clients who share my values with plenty of time left over for myself, my friends and my family!
Because of Jess, I was able to identify my core values and build a self-aligned business around those values with tools to get past limiting beliefs, unhealthy behaviors and energy drains that arise along the way. Her sisterhood circles kept me focused on my goals and the members provided wonderful accountability and support. And the retreat gave me dedicated time away to focus on my creative vision for the future, along with the exact steps for how to get there.
As a result of all this, I’d highly recommend working with Jess!"
She was a pediatric healthcare provider, deeply loved and respected by the organization and families she served, and she arrived at my retreat on medical leave from work, completely burned out, overwhelmed and running on empty. For years she had been holding space for sick children and their parents, then gone home each night to hold everything in her own household together.
"I've read the books. I've done therapy. I try to set boundaries," she said on day one. "So it has to be me, right? I'm the common denominator."
At the retreat, she began to see more clearly the perfectionism and people-pleasing tendencies underneath her over-functioning. This awareness alone gave her enough room for an honest conversation with her husband about what she needed at home and the career change she'd been craving and contemplating.
Within a few months she decided, from clarity rather than panic, to leave a job that no amount of renegotiation or self-care was going to fix. The first couple of months were hard and a little messy but she leaned on faith and the support of her family, me as her coach and my Brave-Hearted Sisterhood community.
Approximately six months later, she accepted a teaching position with benefits, in a workplace that no longer required her to sacrifice herself. She loves the new direction her career path has taken and she now has more help at home than she's had in twenty years. She's also able to ask for what she needs in ways her earlier self never could have imagined.
Although her life is far from perfect, she is much more at peace with her life and is making her own needs and desires a priority in a way she's never done before. She has come back home to herself and practices every day what she learned in my program on how to operate from a place of Radical Wholeness.
"I recently went through a painful breakup and found myself struggling to move forward. I reached out to Jess, and what started as a simple walk together became the beginning of a transformative healing journey.
Through Jess, I learned about attachment styles and participated in an emotional release session that left me feeling more awake and connected to myself than I had in months. Not only that but her book has been an invaluable resource as I've continued that work on my own.
One of the most powerful lessons from the book has been learning about nervous system regulation. Just last week, I experienced a frightening moment that unexpectedly triggered a deep fear of abandonment. Because of what I learned in this book, I was able to recognize what was happening, process it with compassion, and remind myself that I was not actually alone. It was my nervous system responding to an old wound.
Choosing to dive into my healing immediately after the breakup has opened new doors in my life. I've built meaningful new friendships, gained a deeper understanding of myself, and even recently been approached about a career opportunity that aligns with the direction I want my life to take.
As for the book, it's filled with practical tools, insights, and exercises that helped me move from surviving to truly growing. If you're navigating heartbreak, healing, or simply wanting to understand yourself on a deeper level, I highly recommend it.
Jess has a gift for making complex emotional concepts approachable, empowering, and life-changing."
"I am so grateful for Jess. I have been working with her for a year and she has helped me in so many ways, personally and with my business. I’ve learned skills to avoid burnout, make decisions that align with my core values, and help me live with ease and grace instead of stress and overwhelm. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or burned out and want to learn how to get your life back, I highly recommend working with Jess!"

She went on to develop the Brave-Hearted Way, a personalized self-rescue compass and road map that teaches high-capacity women how to create a well-nourished life and career they love without burnout, guilt, or self-abandonment.
Today she is a self-rescue empowerment coach, author, keynote speaker, & founder of Brave Life Consulting, a women-led company committed to the growth, healing & evolution of all women.

Her mission is simple: To contribute to the awakening and ascension of every single woman on the face of the planet by teaching them how to honor and come back home to themselves.
She'll also be the first to remind you that she isn't the hero of your story. You are.
Here is what a day can look like once this work takes hold:
A request comes in and you check in with your energy before you respond. You respond back "Not today, let's look at Thursday" without any guilt or a need to explain. You actually take a lunch break and eat your food, sitting down. Maybe even a sanity break mid-afternoon. Someone is disappointed, and instead of rushing to fix it, you let them be. At the end of the day, there's time left over for you because that's how you've designed it. The people you love help and support you because you've asked for what you need in a way that honors all involved and they understand how it benefits them for you to be the best version of yourself you can be.
Same job. Same people. Same home. You, finally present and prioritized inside of your own life.
Are you ready to come back home to yourself?
You're only one decision from committing to your own self-rescue.
Radical Wholeness is the pathway to creating a well-nourished life and career that you love without burnout, guilt, or self-abandonment.
